Empowering Steps Summer Camps

In addition to typical camps, Club Aviva offers specialized camps for students with special needs. The camps run for four hours a day, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

The camps are coordinated by Vivien Symington, creator of the Empowering Steps Movement Therapy program. The camps focus on social integration, physical development and communication skills. Each day the children and their aides follow a structured schedule, with new activities every 15 to 30 minutes. The schedule is displayed for the campers on a velcro picture symbol chart so that the children can place a picture of each activity beside the correct time and description as they start each activity.

Activities include Movement Therapy, Aqua Therapy (at Chimo Pool), gymnastics, games, arts and crafts, free play time, quiet time, classroom activities, bike riding, and hiking. The most popular of the activities is bike riding, which is done every day, depending on the weather. Club Aviva has a large supply of bikes, many of them with special training wheels for older children.
